Essential Packing Tips for Moving
Transcendent Moving & Storage has been in the moving and storage industry for over 20 years and we have many valuable tips and hacks to share. Being prepared and organized are essential parts of a successful and stress-free move. These helpful packing tips will make your next move more organized and your belongings will be more secure and safe.
When you pack books, they can make for a heavy box very quickly. Use smaller boxes when packing your books to keep the weight down and manageable. Organize your books into two piles, books you have read and books you haven’t. Take a hard look at the books you have read and ask yourself, “Am I going to read this book ever again?” If the answer is no, then donate it, sell it or give it away. Make sure your soft cover books are packed especially tight with no room to move so they don’t end up with creases and damage. Hardcover books are sturdier, but still employ the same concept.
A quick and useful tip for your entertainment console or computer is to snap a photo of the back of them. This will help when figuring out what connects to what when you reassemble them in your new place. Electronics such as computers, televisions, and camera equipment will fit much better in their original packaging, so you want to save those if possible. Camera lenses are expensive items that need proper packing to prevent damage to the glass of the lens. Dust is not a friend to your camera either, so you want to pack your camera bag in a light-tight and padded container.
Everyone loves to take pictures and share them with family and friends on Facebook and Pinterest. Make sure you save copies of important documents and family photos digitally in case there is a mechanical malfunction. Utilizing cloud storage through Google Drive, iCloud, or Dropbox could be a great idea if you want to go with paperless data storage. A portable hard drive can hold over a terabyte of data but can have a limited lifespan. Whether you choose thumb drives, writable DVDs, or Blu-Ray discs, you want to keep them dry and cool to prevent damage. Your data storage unit of choice may be better kept with you as you relocate as opposed to in your mover’s moving truck.
Packing Fragile Items
Fragile items such as mirrors, glassware, and artwork need to be labeled accordingly so your movers know to be extra considerate with where and how to place those boxes on their moving truck. Write in bold and bright colors “Fragile” on the side of these boxes and make sure your fragile items are packed tightly within the box so there is no room to shift and slide around during transit.
Part Ways with Unwanted Items
Whether you want to sell, donate, or throw away an item, eliminating the belongings you can live without will help simplify the moving process. Finding a charitable organization like The Salvation Army or a local church to donate items to will make you feel good about yourself and help those in need. When you share your old items with others, you will have more space and it’s a great opportunity to give back to your community. Selling items on websites such as Ebay or LetGo a month or so in advance is a great way to earn some extra cash before you move. If you have exhausted donating and selling and still have unwanted items left, you can pawn off on family and friends or you may consider pitching it in the trash. Moving day can be made much easier if you become a minimalist and rid yourself of those burdensome possessions. “Out with the old and in with the new” can be your new mindset and you will be able to enjoy your new space more this way.
